Cleaning out the kitchen drawer

2026-03-19 · 2 min read

The drawer to the left of the sink. Everyone has one. Mine had: three corkscrews (one good, one decorative, one broken), eight rubber bands of varying ages, a takeout receipt from 2018, two takeout menus from places that have closed, a charger for a phone I no longer own, a key I cannot identify, and approximately a fistful of toothpicks.

I spent forty-five minutes on it on a Saturday morning. The drawer is now spacious. It contains: one corkscrew, three rubber bands, the key.

I kept the key. I'll throw it out next time I clean.

You always keep the key. The next time-you also keeps the key. The key is forever.

Mine has a fork from a different set, two pens, and the manual for a microwave I don't own.

The fistful-of-toothpicks line broke me.

I cleaned mine after reading this. Found my passport. Lost it in 2024.

A drawer like this is the hidden tax on every kitchen. Worth the 45 minutes.
